Key Responsibilities for a Senior Medical Records Coding Specialist

Accurate Coding & Data Abstraction

  • Assign diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient and outpatient medical records.

  • Apply ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for inpatients and CPT-4 codes for outpatient services not captured in the charge description master.

  • Sequence principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures correctly.

  • Abstract information including admission source, type, disposition, and attending physicians.

  • Address coding edits to ensure accurate MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment for hospital reimbursement.

System & Compliance Management

  • Use IHIS and Computer Assisted Coding/Encoder software to code records accurately.

  • Interface abstracted and coded data with the IHIS Resolute Billing system.

  • Maintain department productivity and quality standards while adhering to approved work schedules.

  • Submit weekly volume logs and meet coding deadlines.


Qualifications & Experience

  • Associate’s Degree in Health Information Management required.

  • Must hold one of the following active credentials: RHIT, RHIA, CCS (AHIMA), COC, CPC (AAPC), or ROCC (for Radiation Oncology coding).

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant coding experience required; 4-6 years preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of inpatient and outpatient coding guidelines and standards.

  • Proficiency in electronic medical record systems and coding software.
