Key Responsibilities for a Senior Medical Records Coding Specialist
Accurate Coding & Data Abstraction

Assign diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient and outpatient medical records.

Apply ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for inpatients and CPT-4 codes for outpatient services not captured in the charge description master.

Sequence principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures correctly.

Abstract information including admission source, type, disposition, and attending physicians.

Address coding edits to ensure accurate MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment for hospital reimbursement.
System & Compliance Management

Use IHIS and Computer Assisted Coding/Encoder software to code records accurately.

Interface abstracted and coded data with the IHIS Resolute Billing system.

Maintain department productivity and quality standards while adhering to approved work schedules.

Submit weekly volume logs and meet coding deadlines.
Qualifications & Experience

Associate’s Degree in Health Information Management required.

Must hold one of the following active credentials: RHIT, RHIA, CCS (AHIMA), COC, CPC (AAPC), or ROCC (for Radiation Oncology coding).

Minimum 2 years of relevant coding experience required; 4-6 years preferred.

Strong knowledge of inpatient and outpatient coding guidelines and standards.

Proficiency in electronic medical record systems and coding software.
