About the Role
Akamai’s Global Backbone Network Engineering team is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to design, deploy, and optimize the backbone infrastructure that powers 20% of global web traffic. In this leadership role, you’ll work with cutting-edge technologies, vendors, and cross-functional teams to ensure our network delivers high performance, reliability, and scalability at a global scale.
Key Responsibilities

Design, deploy, and scale core backbone infrastructure across new and existing global metros.

Install, configure, and maintain Juniper and Cisco hardware in production environments.

Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to expand global points of presence.

Conduct deep protocol-level debugging and resolve complex network issues.

Partner with cross-functional teams to define topology standards and router deployment processes.

Leverage network telemetry and data to optimize performance and plan capacity.

Work closely with architecture, automation, and NOC teams to maintain high availability and reliability.
What We’re Looking For

8+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

Expertise with BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, Traffic Engineering, and RSVP in large service provider environments.

Proven experience in IP network design and routing architecture for ISPs, CDNs, or content providers.

Strong knowledge of Juniper and Cisco hardware deployments.

Familiarity with Linux/Unix systems, SQL, virtualization, and scripting (Python or similar).

Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively in a global team.

Organized self-starter who thrives in cross-functional environments.

Compensation Range (US-based): $101,400 – $210,600/year (base salary) + bonuses, equity awards, and other incentives. Salary outside the US will vary by location.
