Senior Sanitation Truck Driver: Join the City of Dallas

As a Senior Sanitation Truck Driver for the City of Dallas, you’ll be instrumental in keeping our city clean and safe. You’ll operate an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer to transport refuse, recycling, equipment, and other materials within city limits. Beyond driving, you’ll also operate various pieces of heavy equipment at the city’s landfill and play a key leadership role, coaching and training your fellow teammates.


What You’ll Do

  • Ensure Vehicle Readiness: Perform and meticulously track daily pre- and post-trip inspections to guarantee optimal and safe vehicle performance.
  • Maintain Professional Standards: Keep your vehicle clean and functional, including washing the exterior and cleaning the interior, to maintain a professional image and safe conditions. You’ll also support junior staff in equipment care.
  • Accurate Record-Keeping: Maintain detailed activity logs, mileage, and maintenance records by documenting odometer readings for accountability.
  • Prevent Hazardous Disposal: Inspect and verify solid wastes being loaded and unloaded to prevent improper disposal of hazardous materials in the landfill.
  • Lead and Mentor: Schedule, coordinate, and provide senior-level support to other truck drivers, offering leadership, training, and professional development.
  • Respond to Emergencies: Be prepared to work in all types of weather and remain on-call 24/7 for natural disasters or other emergencies.
  • Support Operations: Perform any other assigned trades work as needed.

What You’ll Bring

  • Deep Driving Expertise: Strong knowledge of hazards, safety rules, and regulations for operating large tractor-trailer vehicles and other heavy equipment.
  • Maintenance Know-How: Understanding of preventive vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Skilled Operation: Ability to skillfully and safely operate a tractor-trailer combination and other automotive equipment.
  • Physical Capability: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Navigation Skills: Ability to effectively use and understand city maps.
  • Effective Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Teamwork: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma/GED or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience operating tractor-trailers within the last three years.
  • Licenses:
    • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
    • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the time of application.
    • If your Class A CDL is from out-of-state, you must obtain a Texas Class A CDL within your probationary period.
  • Other:
    • Must pass a background check.
    • Subject to 24/7 call-out.
    • Comfortable working in inclement weather and with toxic materials.
    • Availability to work various shifts (days, evenings, nights).
