About Company
The SLH Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking food in accordance with federal, state, and local standards while following hospital policies and procedures to ensure safe, high-quality meals for patients, visitors, and staff. This role covers hot food preparation, accompaniments, garnishes, and related kitchen duties.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Prepare and cook hot foods including meats, vegetables, soups, and cereals using commercial kitchen equipment. Follow standardized recipes, portioning, and presentation guidelines. Taste meals to ensure quality, complete production worksheets, and maintain waste logs. Plan and prepare menus for special events when requested. Carve meats, plate meals, and oversee tray line and cafeteria service. Prepare ingredients using slicers, grinders, peelers, and hand tools, ensuring proper food safety handling and HACCP compliance. Receive, inspect, store, and rotate food supplies while maintaining accurate records. Ensure proper labeling, dating, and storage of all food items to prevent spoilage. Maintain equipment and work areas in a clean, safe condition and follow department cleaning schedules. Train and orient new staff when assigned. Maintain compliance with hospital safety, infection control, and HIPAA confidentiality policies. Participate in quality improvement programs, performance evaluations, and hospital-wide initiatives. Assist in emergency preparedness drills and follow safety protocols in case of utility failures or hazardous materials.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional training from a cooking school or at least 5 years of related cooking experience preferred. Strong knowledge of food preparation, portioning, HACCP guidelines, and kitchen safety. Ability to work in a hospital food service environment while following infection control standards.
Pay & Benefits
Pay Range: $34.25 – $36.65 per hour (final pay depends on experience, education, skills, and applicable collective bargaining agreements).
