Role Overview
We are seeking a passionate, creative, and organised Social & Digital Media Officer to join our forward-thinking team. This role is ideal for someone who wants to make a meaningful impact by helping small and micro businesses grow, increasing footfall to local markets, and boosting Hackney’s brand presence both online and offline.
As our Social & Digital Media Officer, you’ll lead the design and delivery of engaging multimedia content, develop data-informed social campaigns, and play a crucial part in amplifying the voice of Hackney’s markets and traders.
This is a hands-on, field-based role with mandatory weekend work to capture live market activity. You’ll work closely with internal teams, traders, local communities, and external partners to bring our markets’ stories to life.
Key Responsibilities

Develop and execute creative content strategies for all social media platforms (scheduled, live, and real-time)

Design and publish high-quality, visually engaging content including videos, photos, blogs, reels, and newsletters

Research and stay ahead of digital and social media trends, ensuring campaigns remain relevant and impactful

Build brand presence and audience engagement across all platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, etc.)

Analyse and report on follower growth, engagement stats, and campaign ROI on a monthly and quarterly basis

Write and distribute the bi-monthly newsletter to update stakeholders, traders, council services, and ward members

Respond to customer comments, feedback, and public queries on digital platforms in a timely and friendly manner

Launch competitions, campaigns, and promotions to support footfall and highlight local trader offerings

Coordinate with other council services and local partners to amplify joint campaigns

Ensure alignment with the Council’s wider strategic goals and the 2024–2029 Markets Strategy
Candidate Requirements

Proven experience managing multiple social media accounts for brands or public sector services

A strong portfolio showcasing digital content creation (graphics, video, written)

Familiarity with tools like Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Hootsuite, Meta Business Suite, or equivalent

Solid knowledge of analytics platforms and experience reporting on KPIs and ROI

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Excellent organisation, multitasking, and time management skills

Able to work independently and show initiative in a fast-paced environment

Comfortable with weekend fieldwork, including live social content creation at market sites
