Lighthouse Connections Academy (LCA) is a state-certified, tuition-free K–12 online public school authorized by Oxford Community Schools. LCA serves students across Michigan, including Troy, Royal Oak, Bloomfield Hills, Rochester, and Farmington, providing flexible virtual education from home.
Position Summary
The Special Education Teacher will manage instructional programs for students with special needs virtually. They will collaborate with Learning Coaches, students, teachers, and district professionals to ensure students successfully complete their instructional programs in compliance with federal and state regulations. The role involves the full IEP process, virtual instruction, and ongoing support for student success.
Key Responsibilities

Manage and provide instructional guidance, virtual teaching, and strategies for a caseload of students.

Develop, write, and implement IEPs and 504 plans.

Evaluate assessments, complete report cards, and conduct parent conferences.

Communicate regularly with parents/learning coaches to monitor student progress and address needs.

Coordinate and consult with teachers on specially designed instruction as defined in IEPs.

Provide direct services through web-conferencing software as needed.

Schedule and conduct virtual IEP meetings and participate in the Student Support Team.

Assist with paperwork, documentation, and procedures related to IEPs.

Locate and coordinate service providers for students requiring related services.

Maintain accurate data in the Learning Management System and special education software.

Administer state testing and coordinate adaptations required by IEPs.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or related field.

Valid Michigan Teaching Certification with full approval in at least one special education area.

Meet all continuing education requirements as defined by MDE.

Expertise in special education law and compliance.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Customer-focused and highly flexible approach.

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Technologically proficient, especially with Microsoft Office products.

Travel and attendance at in-person events, including State Testing, may be required.

Ability to use personal electronic devices and email for two-step authentication.
