Job Summary

As a Per Diem Inpatient Coder (Sr Coder), you’ll work remotely to review, assign, and abstract ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and DRG codes for inpatient records in accordance with official coding guidelines and organizational policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate inpatient diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-10-CM/PCS.

  • Apply DRG grouping logic and validate sequencing of diagnoses and procedures.

  • Collaborate with HIM leadership for performance reviews and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Resolve coding issues and inconsistencies with clinical staff.

  • Assist with other coding areas (as needed) across the Southwest Healthcare system.

Required Qualifications

  • Education:

    • High school diploma or equivalent (required)

    • Associate’s degree in Health Information Management (preferred)

  • Experience:

    • 3–5 years of inpatient coding experience

    • Acute care coding experience (required)

  • Certifications (One of the following required):

    • RHIA – Registered Health Information Administrator

    • RHIT – Registered Health Information Technician

    • CCS – Certified Coding Specialist
      (All must be accredited by AHIMA)

Required Skills & Tools

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, DRG/APC, sequencing guidelines, and OSHPD reporting

  • Familiarity with HIPAA, The Joint Commission, and Title 22 compliance

  • Proficient in 3M HDM, Nuance CD One, and EMR systems

  • Excellent organizational, time management, and interpersonal communication skills
