About the Role:

The Wikimedia Foundation is hiring a Staff DBA to maintain and optimize large-scale relational databases that power Wikipedia and sister projects. You’ll work on high-impact systems, ensuring database health, availability, and performance while contributing to open-source initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and optimize MariaDB/MySQL databases across production, development, and staging.

  • Design, implement, and automate replication topologies (multi-site).

  • Consult on database schema design and optimize query performance.

  • Improve observability through monitoring, alerting, and metrics.

  • Plan infrastructure capacity and automate database management workflows.

  • Maintain relationships with MariaDB upstream projects for bug resolution.

  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for incident response.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Advanced MariaDB/MySQL administration, replication, and high availability.

  • Strong SQL, query optimization, and schema design skills.

  • Experience with high-traffic websites and Linux-based infrastructure.

  • 6+ years in hands-on DBA roles.

  • B.Sc./M.Sc. in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

  • Ability to work independently in a global, fast-paced team.

Preferred Skills:

  • Python scripting, automation, and SRE practices.

  • Experience with LAMP stack, MediaWiki, or distributed storage systems.

  • Open-source contributions.
