About the Role:
The Wikimedia Foundation is hiring a Staff DBA to maintain and optimize large-scale relational databases that power Wikipedia and sister projects. You’ll work on high-impact systems, ensuring database health, availability, and performance while contributing to open-source initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:

Maintain and optimize MariaDB/MySQL databases across production, development, and staging.

Design, implement, and automate replication topologies (multi-site).

Consult on database schema design and optimize query performance.

Improve observability through monitoring, alerting, and metrics.

Plan infrastructure capacity and automate database management workflows.

Maintain relationships with MariaDB upstream projects for bug resolution.

Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for incident response.
Required Skills & Experience:

Advanced MariaDB/MySQL administration, replication, and high availability.

Strong SQL, query optimization, and schema design skills.

Experience with high-traffic websites and Linux-based infrastructure.

6+ years in hands-on DBA roles.

B.Sc./M.Sc. in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Ability to work independently in a global, fast-paced team.
Preferred Skills:

Python scripting, automation, and SRE practices.

Experience with LAMP stack, MediaWiki, or distributed storage systems.

Open-source contributions.
