Role Overview

As a Staff DBRE, you will be the technical authority and strategic leader for Drata’s database architecture. You will guide engineering teams, optimize performance, and ensure scalability across the data infrastructure. This role combines hands-on query optimization with high-level architectural leadership, helping Drata maintain reliable, performant, and future-proof database systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Initiatives: Lead long-term strategy for scaling, resiliency, and performance of AWS Aurora clusters and replication environments.

  • Technical Expertise & Evangelism: Serve as the go-to consultant for engineering teams on data modeling, query optimization, and architectural patterns.

  • Performance Optimization: Identify and resolve complex performance bottlenecks using advanced observability tools.

  • Architectural Leadership: Evaluate, prototype, and implement new database technologies and approaches.

  • Observability Ownership: Define and implement key metrics and dashboards for real-time database monitoring and performance tracking.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 15+ years working with large-scale MySQL systems; deep understanding of internal architecture.

  • Extensive hands-on experience with AWS Aurora, including performance tuning, backup, and recovery.

  • Proven ability to mentor and guide engineering teams on database best practices and architectural decisions.

  • Expert in SQL query design, analysis, and optimization; deep relational database design knowledge.

  • Experience with ORMs (bonus for TypeScript and TypeORM).

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication; able to articulate technical issues to diverse audiences.

  • Bonus: Experience with AWS Elasticache (Redis), DynamoDB, or other NoSQL databases.
