About the Role

Washington Virtual Academy (WAVA) is seeking motivated and certified teachers to serve as substitutes in our innovative online public school. Teachers will provide instruction in middle school subjects (ELA/History or Math/Science) within a team-teaching model, supporting approximately 110 students per team.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Deliver engaging online instruction in ELA/History or Math/Science.

  • Apply K12 curriculum and Common Core standards.

  • Lead live classes and small-group intervention sessions.

  • Assign and evaluate student work fairly and consistently.

Communication

  • Maintain regular home–school communication and respond within 24 hours during the workweek.

  • Conduct progress conferences and provide academic updates.

  • Attend weekly online meetings and periodic in-person PD sessions.

  • Collaborate with colleagues in Professional Learning Communities.

Records & Assessment

  • Manage online courses, documentation, and report cards.

  • Support students with preparation and participation in state assessments.

  • Serve on IEP, RtI, 504, or SST teams as needed.

Community Engagement

  • Organize and participate in orientations, training sessions, and student/family activities.

  • Support school events such as open houses, expos, and testing days.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred).

  • Valid state teaching certification (multiple endorsements preferred).

  • Minimum 3 years teaching experience.

  • Strong subject knowledge and instructional skills.

  • Excellent written/verbal communication and organizational skills.

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and online teaching tools.

Preferred Experience

  • Working in alternative or virtual learning environments.

  • Using web-based technology and student information systems.

  • Assisting students and parents with computer setup and navigation.

Working Environment

  • Remote teaching role with 80% sitting, 10% standing, 10% walking.

  • Occasional light lifting, pushing, or pulling.
