Job Description

The Environment Agency is seeking motivated and proactive individuals to join our team as a Technical Officer within the Data and Digitisation Team in Permitting. This exciting role offers a unique opportunity for a Technical Officer to support vital national services at the heart of environmental regulation while contributing to digital transformation projects. You’ll play a key role in enhancing data management, business reporting, and digital systems, while completing a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship. If you’re passionate about data, digital innovation, and protecting the environment — we’d love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities of a Technical Officer

As a Technical Officer, you’ll support the Permitting Service across four critical areas: stabilise, enhance, transform, and decommission. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Applying knowledge from your apprenticeship to work alongside Data Specialists managing and maintaining data systems.

  • Extracting, transforming, and loading data to support accurate KPI reporting, work queues, and permit allocation.

  • Coordinating responses to data queries, resolving database and process issues, and identifying trends.

  • Using a range of analysis and visualisation techniques to present data insights to stakeholders for better decision-making.

  • Promoting data literacy and ensuring compliance with data governance, access, and protection policies.

  • Developing IT solutions using Microsoft 365 Power tools tailored to evolving business needs.

  • Supporting migration to the Regulatory Services Platform (ReSP).

Experience and Skills Required for a Technical Officer

To thrive as a Technical Officer in this role, you should bring:

  • An appreciation for the importance of data quality and strong IT skills.

  • Confidence in handling large datasets and using data analytics for process improvements.

  • Strong organisational, networking, and problem-solving abilities.

  • High attention to detail, literacy, and numeracy skills.

  • A proactive, enquiring mindset with a focus on customer service and team collaboration.

  • Familiarity with the Environment Agency’s systems is desirable, but full training is provided.

Why Work with Us as a Technical Officer?

Joining the Environment Agency as a Technical Officer means becoming part of a friendly, dispersed, and supportive national team. You’ll work in a hybrid role — combining remote work with regular visits to hub locations for training, collaboration, and customer engagement. Every team member plays a part in incident response duties when needed, supporting communities and protecting the environment.

We offer excellent opportunities for personal development, skill building, and making a meaningful difference.
