Position Summary
Fond du Lac County is seeking a culturally competent and language-proficient Bilingual Public Health Interpreter to support communication between public health professionals and non-English-speaking individuals and families. This role plays a vital part in ensuring health equity through accurate interpretation and translation services, primarily in maternal and child health (MCH), WIC, dental, and vaccine appointments.
Key Responsibilities
Communication Skills

Provide accurate and consecutive interpretation between clients, families, and public health professionals

Interpret during scheduled home visits, vaccine clinics, dental/WIC appointments, and other health-related services

Translate verbal and written materials without omissions or additions

May support other departments (e.g., Child Support, Clerk’s Office) as needed

Protect and uphold strict client confidentiality at all times
Cultural Competency

Assess and respond to the needs of individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds

Promote culturally sensitive health service delivery practices
Community Engagement
-
Schedule appointments using electronic systems

Contact clients by phone, text, or email to coordinate services and follow-ups

Interact with the public in person and respond to walk-in requests for interpretation
Public Health & Clinical Support

Assist with public health clinics and outreach events
-
Help coordinate immunization clinics, including scheduling and interpreting

Support emergency preparedness efforts and direct services
Administrative & Direct Support

Accurately type, maintain records, and manage schedules

Arrange client transportation for medical appointments

Participate in ongoing training and assist with other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED
-
Valid Wisconsin driver’s license
-
Demonstrated fluency in English and a second language (tested via Language Line Academy; must score 80–94% or higher)

Excellent oral and written communication skills in both languages

Familiarity with medical and nutrition-related terminology

Strong interpersonal skills and cultural awareness

Proficient time management and ability to manage multiple interruptions

Working knowledge of HIPAA and confidentiality standards

Work Environment
