About the Department

Associated Students (AS) at UCSB is a student-funded, nonprofit department that provides a voice for undergraduate students in campus and community matters. Through elected student leadership and various programs, AS enriches student life, promotes civic engagement, and offers employment and leadership opportunities.

Position Overview

Under the guidance of the Associate Director of Technology & Strategic Communications, the Applications Programmer designs, builds, and maintains over 80 Associated Students websites and digital applications. This role blends technical web development with support for student-led initiatives, enhancing both functionality and user experience. The developer will work with both staff and student groups to ensure websites are user-friendly, accessible, and aligned with department goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Web Design (40%): Design and maintain WordPress sites; customize themes and plugins; implement e-commerce, events, forms, and appointment systems; ensure usability and branding consistency.

  • App/Web Development (40%): Develop and maintain custom web apps using JavaScript, PHP, SQL, Python; troubleshoot issues; collaborate on server and security planning.

  • External Communications (15%): Manage AS Answers FAQ site; respond to online queries; coordinate with social media teams.

  • Special Projects (5%): Manage Slack access, digital forms, and assist with department tech needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field

  • 1–3 years of experience with:

    • Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript

    • WordPress, web/mobile development

    • Media and social media integration

  • Understanding of secure software development practices

  • Intermediate knowledge of object-oriented programming

  • Familiarity with software repositories and IT systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with macOS

  • Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences

  • Problem-solving ability and attention to detail

  • Effective time management and collaboration skills

  • Ability to follow software specs and meet deadlines
